What is InterLibrary Loan?
If an item you’re looking for is not owned by Wake County
Public Libraries and we are unable to offer an adequate substitution,
we may be able to borrow the material from another library in the
United States through a service called InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Through
ILL it is possible for you to obtain books, microfilm, articles and
other items.
What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is an Internet service for placing your InterLibrary loan
requests online. ILLiad is available to all Wake county library patrons
24 hours a day. To access this service, go to:
http://wakegov.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html
How will ILLiad help you?
- You can place your ILL request online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- You only need to register your contact information once
- You can check the status of your ILL request online at any time
- You’ll be notified by email or U.S. mail when your request is ready for pick up at your library branch
- You can request renewals of your ILL loans online
How to Request InterLibrary Loans
View step-by-step instructions.
To make a request:
You must have a current library card with borrowing privileges to
request an ILL. You cannot have fines over $15 or any lost items on your library account. Please be aware it usually takes between 2 to 4 weeks
for a requested item to arrive, and you can submit no more than 4
requests at a time. Visit or call your nearest branch to fill out a
request card, or go to
http://wakegov.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html and submit your
request online.
To request a book
Please provide the book’s correct title and author, plus any
other information you have such as ISBN, publication date or edition.
To request microfilm
Please provide the specific reel number and/or time period you need (for example: The New York Times; Jan-Mar 1920).
To request videos or DVDs
Please provide the item’s correct title plus any other
information you have such as ISBN. Please note that we cannot request
audio books through InterLibrary Loan.
To request a journal article
Please provide the correct journal name & volume, pages numbers, article title & author.
We cannot request:
- Audio books
- Very new books published within the last 6 months
Please have your branch send such requests to the Collection
Development department and the item will be considered for purchase by
Wake County Public Libraries.
Please keep in mind certain materials may be difficult to obtain:
- Genealogical material
- Material not published in the U.S.
- Very old or rare books
- Very expensive books
- Audio-visual material
- Reference material
When your ILL arrives
Items usually arrive within 2 to 4 weeks and you will be contacted
by email or U.S. mail. Because we cannot guarantee renewals for these
items, be sure to pick them up promptly from your branch. Click here to learn more about the ILLiad statuses.
What happens if we can’t get the item you want?
You will be notified by email or U.S. mail if we are unable to borrow the item you requested.
Checking Out Your ILL item
Visit your branch’s circulation desk to pick up your item.
Please do not remove the due date label on the item’s cover.
Renewing Your ILL item
Loan periods and renewals are determined by the lending library.
Be aware that some lenders do not allow renewal. Log on to your ILLiad
account to request a renewal online, or call 919-250-1205, or send an
e-mail to ILLRequestsLibrary@wakegov.com. The lender usually
determines a renewal within 2-7 days. You will be notified by phone or
e-mail of the final due date. The final date will also be posted to
your ILLiad account. Fines will not increase while a
renewal is pending.
Returning your ILL item
Please return ILL materials by the due date. There is a charge of
25 cents per day for overdue materials. When returning ILL materials,
please be sure the label is still attached, bring them inside
the library and give them to a librarian instead of dropping them off
in a return bin. If an item is lost, the patron is expected to pay the
lender's charges for replacement.
